Basic Info
Name:Kanda Yuu [OU]
Bio
sempiternalis;

[n.] eternal; enduring forever

Name: Kanda Yuu
Series/Fandom: D. Gray-man
Universe: Original
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Sexuality: Asexual
Barracks Assignment: Sor-Okto

Appearance:
Kanda is of an average to tall height for a Japanese male, at around 175 cm. His features, as often pointed out by Allen as an insult, were rather feminine to begin with. He is slim to the point of being slender, has pale skin and has flowing straight dark blue hair, very long and usually kept in a high ponytail. Bangs framed his face, falling over bluish-gray eyes. His elegant and attractive face, however, is often marred by a constant expression of sheer malcontent.

On the right side of his chest is a tattoo of Hindu seal of some sort which is connected to some of his abilities, including that of his ability to heal and regenerate himself in a few hours. It is also related to the lotus, which he keeps in an hourglass. He keeps this tattoo hidden at all times and, as much as possible, dislikes being questioned about it.

He is often dressed in the uniform of the Black Order, which serves as his ticket and identity as an Exorcist. Every uniform is unique to an Exorcist and his consists of a long black trench coat with white and silver trims, including a rose crest pinned on the front, the insignia of the Black Order. Under this uniform is usually a white button-down shirt [or bandages] and a pair of black pants. Knee-high black boots with silver buckles serve as his footwear.

Personality:
While Kanda would probably score high in the looks department, the young man would fail miserably in a personality contest.

He is apathetic, unsociable, short-tempered, bad-tempered, somewhat bossy, sarcastic, curses like a pirate, has tendencies to call people names and claims to hate a lot of things to the point that "there are too many to write down"—including sweets, people who can't keep their mouths shut [Tiedoll], people calling him by his given name [Lavi] and people with naive thinking [Allen]. Cardinal sins to him would include being loud, being stupid or, worse, being emotional. He prefers to keep all his relations formal and presents himself as a blank wall of non-emotion.

However, despite being the King of Irate, Kanda has several characteristics that qualifies as his good points. He is extremely driven, disciplined, confident, is aware of his abilities and fears nothing and no one. As long as he is following orders, he will not hesitate to act and fight, expressing his strong loyalty to the Black Order and has good work ethics and professionalism, not letting his personal dislikes get in the way of work. As a samurai, he has a moral code that he does follow. He also holds great—albeit grudgingly—respect to the abilities of several people, including his General and mentor [no matter how talkative and emotional he is], Komui [no matter how incompetent he might seem to him] and Allen Walker [no matter how naive he thinks].

Despite his constant claims of "It's not my business" and "If you die, I'll leave you", Kanda does have potential to be selfless, shown by his several actions during the war. He is selfless and driven enough to sacrifice himself and stay to fight, if that is the only way to get the others out of the situation, insisting that they are "still working". This drive keeps him alive to search for 'that person' who had cursed him and set him down on this path.

On a different note, his favorite foods are soba and tempura and will kill other people over it. Seriously.

Abilities/Strengths:
For one thing, Kanda is one of the people called “Apostles”. They are those who are compatible with the Innocence, meaning that he can activate and use its power to fight against Akuma. Only the Apostles or the Exorcists can manipulate the power of the Innocence. The Innocence is a strange and ancient material which, when activated, can be transformed into a weapon and be used to fight against the Millennium Earl and the Akuma. Combined with his skills as a master swordsman, honed by years of training, he is a force to be reckoned with against the Earl.

His Innocence is called Mugen, in the shape of a Japanese katana, which means "Six Illusions". At present, Kanda is able to use three of those illusions and it is speculated that there will be three more.

~ Kaichuu: Ichigen [First Illusion: Hell's Insects] - releases a swarm of spiritual insects or creatures that devour his opponents
~ Nigentou [Two Illusion Blades] - Mugen and its scabbard become coated with white energy and turn into two very sharp weapons. Using the Nigentou, he can perform a special move called Hakka Tourou [Eight Flowers Praying Mantis], a quick slashing movement.
~ Shouka [Sublimate] - it uses and activates the power of his tattoo and with this, he can step up to the third Illusion.
~ Kinki Sangenshiki [Taboo Three Illusions] - in exchange for some of his life, Kanda is granted more speed and power. However, the user must be able to finish using this Illusion before a halo is formed [much like a blade being drawn and cutting out his flesh] around the tattoo on his chest or the user will die instantly.

His other predominant ability is his accelerated healing and regeneration, directly linked to the curse given to him by that mysterious person. For example, when a normal human being, injured to such a degree, would have to stay in the hospital for several months, it would only take him a few days to recover his full power. He is also immune to different poisons, including that of the Akuma, most likely because of this ability.

Weapons:
His main Anti-Akuma weapon is the Innocence in the shape of a samurai katana, Mugen. Normally, its blade is black in color until when activated, it turns into silver. Activated or not, it can cleanly slice through almost anything.

Weaknesses:
While doing a remarkable job of keeping an aloof demeanor, even Kanda has some vulnerability of his own. These vulnerabilities are connected with the tattoo on his chest, the curse bestowed upon him and the lotus flower, which he keeps in an hourglass. It is said that the lotus flower in his possession has 13 petals. And once the 13 petals had fallen, once it wilted, Kanda would die instantly unless he finds the person who had placed the curse on him. It would be a hard journey but he must walk through it alone.

Although Allen and Lavi consider him as their nakama [although it seems synonymous with ‘friend’, there seems to be a stronger connection if one is called a ‘nakama’] and Lenalee and the rest of the Black Order as a family member, he often places a barrier between him and the people around him, refusing to trust or open up. It can then be said that, while Kanda has acquaintances and comrades, he does not have ‘friends’ at all.

History: [Spoilers for recent events of the manga]
Not much is known about Kanda’s past as the man simply refuses to divulge any information about him. But he was born in Japan, a country where the Akuma and the Millennium Earl were wrecking havoc, asserting dominance. It could then be assumed that Kanda, coming from a samurai family, had been the taught with the ways of the sword through rigorous training perhaps since the day he could walk. All his life, Kanda knew what fighting was all about. However, a few things are still unknown about him: when he had acquired compatibility with the Innocence and how. There is also a question with regards to Mugen, if he had inherited it from his family or it was an Innocence that had merely changed its form to suit him.

But almost immediately, General Tiedoll had taken the boy to the Black Order Headquarters where he met the young Lenalee Lee and he started training him for the life of an Exorcist. Again, there were blank pages during his training years with the General. But it can be speculated that something had happened during that time and he acquired the curse and tattoo on his chest.

There was an event several years in the past, perhaps an all-out attack by the Akuma or something similar, that nearly killed Kanda. He was died—or rather, came very close to it at that time when a mysterious person had bestowed him a gift and curse. The person only left the words, “A life lost and regained is a cheap life; make sure you use yours well. Guard the flower, and it will guard you - when it wilts, your extra time is spent. If you prove yourself worthy of a true life once more, then find me, and I will make you whole” to him before he left Kanda in the hospital, mysteriously healed, with a lotus flower in an hourglass and a tattoo on his chest. Upon fully recovering, Kanda became a full-fledged Exorcist and went on a mission to prove his worth while searching for ‘that person’.

At the age of eighteen, Kanda met Allen Walker, animosity forming at once, and they were assigned a mission to retrieve a fragment of the Innocence. However, after finishing the mission, he was sent to another one as the Millennium Earl, along with the clan of Noah [super humans who had descended from Noah himself and are out to ‘cleanse’ the world of filthy humans], had started its manhunt on the remaining Exorcists in search for the Heart of the Innocence. Kanda, along with his two teammates [one of them killed by a Noah], was assigned to search for his Master, General Tiedoll, and bring him back to the Headquarters. Allen and the others were doing the same, this time, in search of the missing General Cross Marian, heading to the East. General Tiedoll, however, refused to go back to the Black Orders HQ and insisted on searching for more hosts for the Innocence.

The war between the Millennium Earl and the Exorcists started on mainland Japan and this led Kanda and his group back to Allen and the others. Apparently, General Cross was hiding in Japan as well. After a short battle with the Noah clan, Kanda, along with Allen, Lavi, Linali, Crowley and a Supporter, was sucked into the Noah’s Ark, a parallel dimension which was slowly crumbling into pieces and there was only one way out: the door of one of the Noah Clan at the top of a tower. Upon arriving though, they were quickly confronted with Skin Boric, another member of the clan, and Kanda was the first one to fight, in order for the others to find the exit.

Kanda was extracted from Ark and moved to Econtra after his intense fight with Skin Boric, mere moments from his own death via Ark disintegration; this means, of course, that he would be arriving, heavily injured. Fortunately, Mugen had reformed just prior to this.
